Josh Butten – Mike Jackson Award Winner

JBJosh was recently invited to a regional Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) Awards evening at Putteridge Bury. The prestigious neo-Elizabethan Manor House built in 1911 based upon the style of Chequers – the Prime Ministers country retreat.

Josh was presented with the ‘Mike Jackson Award’ which acknowledges the individual who has attained Outstanding Exam Achievement over the past 12 months.

The award is in celebration of Josh becoming the youngest to have achieved Chartered Financial Planner, Chartered Wealth Manager, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM and Fellowship of the Personal Finance Society – all within the past year.

Josh was delighted to be recognised for his achievements and said “It’s a real honour to be acknowledged by my peers and local CII Institute at such a prestigious event. The last seven years of passing exams has taken a serious time commitment and I am now enjoying being able to focus more of my time with clients”.

Josh is now considering if there is value in pursuing further Industry Qualifications, with the ‘Masters in Financial Planning’ being the obvious final step.

This award joins our teams growing collection of professional awards which acknowledge our passion and drive to continually improve the lives of our clients.

Prior to the Awards being handed out, Sundeep Dhillon MBE gave an inspiring and somewhat graphic speech about his struggles and achievements. In 1998 Sundeep was the 60th person to climb all Seven Summits and became the youngest man to have ever done so. The speech was extremely relevant for Josh as his friend Leanna Shuttleworth is also a member of the very exclusive ‘Seven Summit’ club – at the time of writing only 409 people have ever achieved this.

Within our team Josh is now leading the way on qualifications and with similar support others are following, which is great news for our clients as we are setting very high benchmarks, much higher than the minimums set by our regulators.

The team is providing the peace of mind that we will be able to look after current clients and future generations which we believe is important when choosing your families Financial Planner.

Making Best use of Resources – Our Wildlife Tree

Having lost our largest tree, a superb Horse Chestnut (but very luckily, not our home) to the winds, we lost 50% of our conker supplies!

Looking on the bright side……

We and many friends now have plenty of Firewood for future winters.

Having lost the shade, we can now consider a solar renewable energy investment.

We also have a daily reminder of our former tree as well as the wildlife that visits.

Thanks to Tree Sculptor, Andrew Frost, we now have a sculpture featuring a Buzzard taking a Trout whilst an Owl ignores, together with Badger, Fox, Hedgehog, Stoat, Hare, Deer, Squirrel, Kingfisher, Woodpecker, Wren and even a nasty Trout eating Heron!

Judging by visitors reactions it seems that we have made good use of our resource and turned  sadness into pleasure.

What do you think?

Keith Butten – Jonathon Timms Memorial Award Winner

Keith was surprised to be presented with the Jonathon Timms Memorial Award by BBC’s Steph McGovern at the recent Institute of Financial Planning (IFP) Conference at Celtic Manor.

Jonathon Timms Award Oct 2015 copy

Jonathon was a well liked and respected member of the IFP who tragically died in a motorbike accident. The award in his honour is presented to the candidate that has achieved the best result in the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) qualification, which requires an extremely detailed case study.

Keith was, and remains, the first person to pass the revised CFP qualification upon first submission. Mark Thewlis, who tutored the MDG MK team prior to Josh, Vicki and Keith undertaking the award, said was not possible. That was good enough motivation for Keith, who promptly went on to produce a plan that met the strenuous standards!!

Lucy Courtenay, Chief Executive of Financial Planning Standards Board said “Congratulations go to Keith Butten CFPcm of Myers Davison Ginger who won the Jonathon Timms award. Keith passed the Principles of Financial Planning exam first time in August 2014. He then passed his case study assessment on the first attempt to complete the Diploma in Financial Planning in February this year. This is a fantastic achievement and Keith is a worthy winner.”

Subsequently, Vicki and most recently Josh have both met the standards and been awarded their Certified Financial Planner qualifications.

For Josh, combined with his other 20 financial planning exams, this now means that he has achieved sufficient ‘points’ to also be recognised as Chartered and as a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute. It is also official that Josh has more letters he could use after his name as opposed to in it and that he has overtaken ‘Dad’ in the exam league.

Josh hopes to inspire other young people to enter Financial Planning, as the profession has a massive skills gap that needs filling so as to better serve the UK population. This gap is highlighted by the flattering but pointless job offers that Josh receives daily!

Josh said “Keith deserves his award not just for his remarkable CFP achievement but for his mentoring of me throughout my 7 year qualification journey, I could not wish for a better teacher. We now look forward to finding my replacement to join the MDG MK team so that I can spend my time focused on advising clients.”

Keith said “The achievements of Josh and Vicki, mean that our clients outcomes will be assured, for many many years to come.”

Creating Jobs in Financial Planning….

Thanks to the MDG MK team’s commitment to our wonderful clients, we are now in a position to create another great job in Financial Planning. Importantly the role is in a client focused independent business that puts clients first and excels every day.

We are now seeking a Private Client Planner who will work closely with our Financial Planners to develop and review clients Lifestyle Financial Planning using Lifetime Cashflow Software. The outcome of which is that our clients have ownership of lifestyle objectives and a sound financial plan to achieve their desired outcomes.

Sourcing the right person for this role will then free Josh to spend more time with clients, in turn stregthening our Private Client Services, which can only be good.

If you are interested in seeing our proposed new office close to Milton Keynes and M1 J13, where our team will be based (assuming planners support our application), have a sneak preview by viewing this image. We are all looking forward to our new outlook. Of course our current location is equally wonderful just getting too small thanks to the teams success.

If you are not familiar with all that Milton Keynes has to offer, take a look at this article, with so much going on, great countryside and plenty of great value housing, you may just want to relocate to MK!

Feel free to review the Job Description and contact Keith Butten at the earliest opportunity. OTE ranges from £30,000 to £48,000 dependent upon the experience and qualifications of the successful new team member.

Any help that you can provide to put the right person in touch with us will be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance……

Keith, Josh & The Team

Emergency Budget 2015 – A Message to our Clients

ATTENTION – This Budget has far reaching affects on you, our clients. Please take time to read our guide.

In our guide to the key announcements from the Chancellor George Osborne’s Emergency Budget 2015, the message is very clear: this Chancellor is set on a major reform programme this Parliament.

We saw reforms to Inheritance Tax, a new National Living Wage, new tax on Dividends, and a pension’s tax relief restriction for high earners. We even saw changes to forgotten taxes like Vehicle Excise Duty and Insurance Premium Tax.

In addition, the Chancellor is allocating additional funds to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) to tackle tax avoidance and compliance. This includes the introduction of a ‘special measures’ regime to tackle businesses that persistently adopt highly aggressive behaviours around tax planning.

One thing is clear – the tax lock has not stopped the Chancellor from increasing the overall tax burden. The tax changes alone raise an additional £29bn, more than the total amount raised in one year from either business rates or council tax.

The Chancellor has also promised a plethora of consultation documents, some of which were provided and others that will appear over the summer, including the potential reform of pensions to be taxed like Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs).

All in all, the Chancellor delivered a surprising array of policies and reforms. Taxes have clearly risen but the impact is at first hard to see. However, that impact is something many individuals and businesses are likely to feel over the rest of this Parliament’s lifetime. If you receive a large proportion of your income by way of Dividends or benefit from large pension contributions (paid by you or your employer), this budget has devil in it’s detail.

Are your financial plans still on track after the Emergency Budget 2015?

Should you be taking advantage of the opportunity to get higher rates of tax relief on pension contributions before 5th April after which you are unlikely to be able to do so?

There are likely to have been a number of key announcements in this Budget that will have a bearing on your current and future financial plans. Our team can ensure you capitalise where possible.

We encourage you to read our Guide to this Emergency Budget

To review what action you may require to take to keep your plans on track, please contact us – we look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Keith, Josh and the team at MDG MK

Supporting Young Talent

blaneweb5

The team at MDGMK are supporting another young person, this time a Professional Golfer who needs support in order to focus his attention on ‘winning ways’.

Blane Breheny turned Pro at the age of 21, is now about to embark on his 2nd season as a Pro, he will this year play on the Euro Pro Tour, Jamega Tour and Gecko Tour in Spain. Blane’s next big objective is to progress to the global Challenge Tour and then the European Tour.

Blane plays his golf at Woburn off a handicap of Plus 3, which is excellent at such tough home courses as The Dukes, The Duchess and The Marquess.

To fund travel, hotels, coaching, caddie etc for the year will cost Blane just under £40,000, therefore, he seeks donors, sponsors and investors wishing to take an interest in his progress.

As well as helping with cash flows and financial planning, the team at MDGMK are contributing so as to enable Blane to fulfill his sporting ambition.

Keith Butten said ‘We love being associated with young people who aspire to achieve something special, having known Blane for many years and watched his progress I am confident that he has what it takes to make it to the top of his game. Most importantly though, Blane is a great role model for other young people and will have inspired many others without even realising it.’

If you would like to support Blane, contact the team at MDG to find out how you can play your part, as an investor you may even get a return albeit this is most certainly not a regulated authorised investment, but its better than a share of a racehorse as you can even get to challenge Blane to a game!!
